Fiber Optic Splicing

Join, repair and test fibre optic cable for telecom, data, utility and industrial networks.

What it does

Low-loss network connections, repairs and upgrades.

Fiber optic splicing joins the glass strands inside a cable so light can pass through the connection with very little loss. Careful stripping, cleaning, cleaving and alignment are critical.

Fusion splicing uses an electric arc to create a permanent joint. Mechanical splicing aligns the fibres inside a precision fixture and is useful for selected repairs and field situations.

Syncore supports new network installations, damaged-cable repair, system extensions and upgrades, with testing to confirm connection quality.

Good fit for

Where fiber optic splicing earns its keep.

  • Fusion splicing
  • Mechanical splicing
  • New network installations
  • Cable repair and restoration
  • System extensions and upgrades
  • OTDR testing and connection checks

Plan the work

Three things that shape the plan.

  1. 01

Provide cable type, strand count, splice locations, enclosure requirements, test standard and outage or cutover window.

  2. 02

The technician needs a clean, dry and stable working area to protect the glass and keep contamination out of the splice.

  3. 03

For new underground networks, splicing can be coordinated with Syncore's conduit and directional drilling work.

Fiber optic splicing FAQ

Questions to answer before the crew arrives.

These are the questions that help determine whether this is the right method for the job.

01What is fiber optic splicing?

It is the process of joining the glass fibres inside two cable sections. The goal is a protected, aligned connection with very low signal loss.

02What is the difference between fusion and mechanical splicing?

Fusion splicing permanently joins prepared fibre ends with an electric arc. Mechanical splicing holds aligned ends in a precision fixture. The cable, connection standard and field situation determine which is appropriate.

03Can you repair a damaged fibre cable?

Often, yes. The damaged location, remaining cable length, enclosure space and number of affected strands determine the repair plan.

04How do you check the splice?

A technician can use the splicer's loss estimate plus test equipment such as an OTDR to check the connection and identify faults along the fibre route.

05Can splicing be coordinated with a new underground route?

Yes. Syncore can review the conduit installation, directional drilling and final fibre splicing as connected parts of the same project.
